Because of the anonimity(excuse my misspelling)and they think it’s safe because of that reason, but can they still be tracked down by law enforcement somehow, even if it’s via the internet? Kind of like similar to tracing an obscene phone caller?
Although a person uses the internet to commit criminal or illegal activity over the internet?

They can still be tracked. Each computer connected to the Internet has a unique IP address. That IP address can be tracked back to an ISP, and the ISP can provide the information on who had that IP address at any time.

yes, the ip address can be logged and if the time is recorded along with it the ISP of the person is able to pull up records of who was using what that particular IP address at the time of the incident.

yeah, almost anywhere a computer visits, the IP of that computer is logged, all the gov’t has to do is track where the IP has been.
If your wondering about piracy/free downloading, then there are companies like safenet that constantly track internet usage and log the IP addresses of computer that download copyrighted data. Then they let the ISP (internet service provider) know whats going on, then the ISP usually sends a warning e-mail.

yes they can …
the internet service providers wont
provide our ip addresses for anyone
but for the police fbi cia etc. they will …
so once they found out ip adress
they got our phone number and
our street address …

yeah they can be tracked down when we use anonymous proxies
most of them are the proxies submitted by some of the hackers and most of the proxies are not sock proxies
means opaque proxies
the proxies which some of the people use are transparent proxies
the proxies submitted over net are submitted by most of the big companies
and by taking some of their time they can easily track it out
if we leave any evidence over there
so proxies are just the custom thing that we use during any criminal offence or illegal
things
there are many other sofwares and tricks which the hackers use to make themselves anonymous
so conclusion is that our ip can be tracked down if even we are using proxies

they could but they are very sneaky people, they might be hacking using the address of someone elses’ whom they can get access to. i think internet security needs a breakthrough- i wonder who will figure it out.

sure can, have you heard about how some sickos got caught emailing child **** from different countries to one another from one sicko to another sicko? so yes.

yes, of course.
unless if you are smart enough, then they might never find you.

From all I that I have heard they can be tracked..But don’t anyone personally, that this has happened too. Might be a good thing I don’t huh?

The smart ones can’t. They simply drive around until they find an unsecured router and attach to it. They use a USB or PCMCIA network device, not their built in network device so they have a disposable MAC. The police will be able to track down the IP of the router that was used but they’ll have no way of tracking down who was logged into the router. So many routers have the default password still set that the hackers simply erase the logs when they’re done.
There is also a Live CD based on OpenBSD called Anonym OS that is used to mask both the MAC address (it sets a false one) and anonymize the users identity. It is time consuming and extremely difficult to track down the originating IP. Running Anonym OS is slow (since it is CD based) but it is effective.
