What is the most likely problem to be the cause of this computer problem on a Mac?

I have a MacBook Core 2 Duo 2.16 Ghz 4 GB ram 120G HD
Has been working flawlessly for near 3 years , 4 months ago I replaced the HD with a new one of the same due to errors.
Working on it last night and was working fine then I heard an audible click and felt on the keyboard what felt like a light pencil tap and the screen went black and at the same time the light in front of the computer that normally indicated sleep mode came on but it came on steady , It refused to (wakeup) . I shut down the computer holding the power key Many times , Removed the battery , Restarted the computer many times and it always returns to the same condition . Light on steady , black screen. I even tried to boot from a external HDD with OS 10.4.9 , Same condition. The backlight flashes on for a split second every time I restart . then goes off.
I can replace anything that goes bad on this computer but I cannot afford to throw money into parts not knowing what is actually bad . I have no way to test . Warrentee is out now .
I am thinking logic board , Maybe inverter

I do not want answers from PC nuts
I would like a reasonable answer from someone that knows MacBooks
If you know something for me to try , Let me know
If you know how to test something , Let me know
In way of reply , I am not familiar with a PRAM Zap, Hold till it chimes ?
I did hold the power button until it flashed the sleep indicator light rapidly . ( something that was suggested )
Never spilled anything on the computer , I have a special slanted rolling desk with only room for the computer to prevent temptation of setting any drinks down near the computer . I dont know if it would be worth a Logic board as I might just get a new one . The logic boards I have seen have been $500 but I might consider upgrading to the 2.4Ghz if it would fit in the same case .
By the way , it is a 13.3 inch MacBook I was considering a new palm rest as the current one has a small ***** in the lower right edge from trying to pry up . Minor but not expensive to replace
Also Do you know about the places that through E-Bay repair Logic Boards ?, Usually around $200
Try them or stay away from them ?
Would love to chat about this
