My dog-chihuahua, was diagnosed with heartworms a few months ago and he was on preventative but the vet said that he should have been retested 6 months later than the original test date since they don’t always show up when you test them the 1st time. Well, we started the treatment and he already had kidney, liver and a lot of heart damage so she let us know right off it was risky but we’d do a split treatment. He barely pulled through after the 1st so I decided not to take him back for the 2nd which I was told the 1st kills the adult worms and the 2nd helps get any that survived and break them up more so the dog can pass them and kill the eggs, which do not really cause harm but are contageous through mosquitos. Since he was so sick after the 1st treatment, I told my vet my decision and she said she understood but we should do bloodwork but I didn’t because I really didn’t think he was going to survive another treatment after seeing him with the 1st one and I really felt selfish for putting him through it to begin with.
Well it’s been 3 months and little improvement with him as far as moving around and playing… but do you think I should take him back to resume treatments? Is it possible to reverse all the heart damage or should I let it go?
The eggs do not hatch in dogs, they hatch in mosquitos and get passed to dogs but he still could have adult worms.
